How are you using the skills and knowledge that you learnt from this event?
-
By encouraging students to concentrate more on observing/feeling the environment
-
Applying this knowledge to a research project which involves developing a navigational device for the blind/vision impaired
-
Incorporating the techniques and explaining the theory to my student during O&M sessions.
-
I'm doing further research in the area of FlashSonar to add to my skills and knowledge
-
The O&M knowledge from this event has helped me to advise clients and their families on O&M matters. I have been able to help some clients who are only just walking seek out O&M intervention as soon as possible.
-
On daily basis with each and every client being O&M Specialist working with clients of all ages
-
Applying them to students Sharing the information through Professional Development
-
Have you introduced FlashSonar to one of your clients? Please describe the strategies you used and how its progressing.
-
Not yet
-
I have no clients
-
Yes, we had discussed it prior to the seminar and again since. I think she is already using some of the techniques without realising so I am trying to help her develop these skills.
-
Not at this stage
-
I believe the course gave me a good understanding of flash sonar however I do not think the course gave me enough knowledge to teach FlashSonar to my clients. I have started introducing families to concepts of helping the child explore their surroundings but am not confident in how to teach FlashSonar.
-
Yes, i have used strategies detailed in Daniel's Flash Sonar Program available from WAFTB website. Some client are still waiting for distinct "aha" moment, some have been using passive echolocation for some time and are very receptive to "fine- tuning" their auditory reception and analysing information received.
-
Yes Echolocation
-
Have you shared the skills and knowledge you gained from this course with your colleagues? How did you do this? Please tell us about the impact of this.
-
Yes, talking about it during the staff meeting and playing YouTube presentation with Daniel Kish
-
I did introduce the concept to the research team. I showed them the 'clicking' technique and had them walk around the office identifying doorways and corners.
-
Yes, informally after the seminar and they were very interested to hear my summary of the day. If/when they have students to which they can introduce FlashSonar, I think we will discuss it again.
-
No
-
This course has been discussed with my colleagues but the impact has just been sharing of information, not a change in practice.
-
I have shared all material and information gained during our meetings, have conducted few practices, joint client assessments. Our O&M Team is now equipped with FlashSonar/Echolocation training kit with all material and training program published on WAFTB. I am planning to continue "buddy" system with other O&Ms, more practice and further presentations at various meetings
-
Yes Staff Meeting Power Point
-
Do you believe that the skills and knowledge that you learnt from this event will improve the educational outcomes for the students and clients you support? How will you/ how have you measured the results of this?
-
Yes
-
I believe this knowledge has already changed the course of our research. We are addressing a lot of new questions about how our device will best serve a BVI audience, and what types of information we need to be giving this audience.
-
Yes, any improvement to safe & independent travel skills is a significant event, greatly improving outcomes for my student.
-
Yes - As yet I have not had the opportunity of working with a client to develop FlashSonar skills. Educational outcomes could be measured by direct observation of client using skills of FlashSonar.
-
I believe this course was very inspiring and made some very good points about how to communicate with vision impaired people and some good O&M tips. However I don't think the course gave enough detail to change/improve current practice.
-
Yes Their ability to do echolocation
-
The training provided on the day has only scratched the surface of the larger skills and knowledge phenomenon. It has inspired me a lot to search more, question the traditional approach. It is still very early to gauge the real difference in our clients confidence and proficiency to travel
